ClauseFrame for Microsoft Word

ClauseFrame runs as an Office.js taskpane for active contract review inside Microsoft Word. After the review, it saves only the metadata-only Review record, selected risks and reminders.

Install the add-in

Pick where you use Word. Each route ends the same way: a ClauseFrame button appears in Word, and clicking it opens the review pane. You’ll need the add-in file first:

Download the ClauseFrame add-in file (a small .xml file - it tells Word where to find ClauseFrame)

Word in the browser (easiest - works on any computer)
  1. Go to office.com, sign in, and open any Word document.
  2. On the Home tab, click Add-ins, then More Settings.
  3. In the Office Add-ins window, click Upload My Add-in.
  4. Choose the clauseframe-manifest.xml file you downloaded above and click Upload.
  5. A ClauseFrame button appears on the ribbon - click it and sign in.

Note: the browser remembers this per browser - if you clear your cache or switch browsers, repeat these steps.

Word on Mac
  1. In Finder, press Cmd+Shift+G and paste: ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Documents/wef (if the wef folder doesn’t exist, create it).
  2. Copy the downloaded clauseframe-manifest.xml into that folder.
  3. Quit and reopen Word.
  4. On the Insert tab, open the Add-ins (or My Add-ins) dropdown - ClauseFrame is listed under Developer Add-ins. Click it.
Word on Windows (ask your IT admin - it’s a 5-minute job)

On Windows, Microsoft only supports installing custom add-ins through your organisation’s Microsoft 365 admin - there is no reliable end-user route. Two easy alternatives: use Word in the browser (above) today, or send your IT admin the block below. Once the admin deploys it, ClauseFrame appears automatically in Word for everyone selected - Windows, Mac and web.

For your IT admin

Copy and send this. It deploys ClauseFrame to chosen users across Word on Windows, Mac and the web.

Please deploy the ClauseFrame Word add-in for our legal team:

1. Microsoft 365 admin center -> Settings -> Integrated apps
2. Upload custom apps -> Office Add-in -> "Provide link to manifest file"
3. Manifest URL: https://clauseframe.com/manifest.xml
4. Assign to the requesting users (or the legal team group) and accept.

The add-in is an Office.js taskpane served from clauseframe.com.
It requests Word document read/write permission only, and stores no
documents: clauseframe.com/security-privacy

After installing

  1. Open a contract in Word and click the ClauseFrame button.
  2. Sign in with the same account you used on this site.
  3. Run your first Review - then Apply or Dismiss suggestions and save the Review record.

What happens in Word

  • Read the active Word document body for the current review.
  • Read highlighted text when the lawyer chooses focus mode.
  • Show proofreading, legal risk, redline, negotiation and comment suggestions.
  • Apply wording and add comments where the Word host supports those actions.

What ClauseFrame saves

  • Review summary and decision counts.
  • Safe descriptions of Applied and Dismissed suggestions.
  • Selected risks and reminders.
  • Metadata-only contract reference where the user confirms it.

Word compatibility

ClauseFrame works fully on up-to-date Word with a Microsoft 365 subscription, and on Office 2024:

Older one-time-purchase versions (Word 2016, 2019 and 2021) are not supported: the add-in may load, but automatic Track Changes control and Word comments are unavailable there. Word on iPad is untested and not currently supported. An internet connection and a ClauseFrame account are required.

Limitations and privacy

Your contract is processed for the active review and is not stored by ClauseFrame. ClauseFrame saves only the Review record, risks and reminders you choose to keep.

ClauseFrame is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. Suggestions and reminders must be reviewed by qualified users before use or reliance.
